Kniphofia 'Alcazar'.
A genus of plants from Africa commonly known as 'Red Hot Poker'. This variety 'Alcazar' has a fairly deep red coloured flower only developing yellow at the base of the flower as it ages. You can see in the far left photo that there are some old flower spikes that have finished flowering several weeks before this photo was taken in early June, the current flowers were followed by another late flush which meant that including all 3 flushes they flowered for 4 months. As well as providing a spectacular hot colour display bees love the nectar, as do humming birds if you are lucky enough to be visited by them. This is a medium sized Kniphofia reaching about 80cm tall with the lax leaves around the base covering about 80cm sq. The lax and untidy way that the leaves tend to flop is the main detractor of this plant, and most Kniphofias, especially after the flower spikes have finished and been cut back and all that remains is the untidy leaves that should not be trimmed back until the frosts.
